Man sentenced to probation in attempted truck theft

URBANA — A Homer man who admitted trying to steal a dump truck in rural St. Joseph earlier this year has been sentenced to three years of probation.

Rick Steffey, 45, pleaded guilty Wednesday before Judge Heidi Ladd to attempted unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, admitting that on Sept. 1, he got inside a truck belonging to a rural St. Joseph man and started the engine without the man's permission. A more serious charge of possession of a stolen vehicle was dismissed in return for his plea.

Steffey was given credit on his sentence for 66 days served in jail. The state also terminated the probation he had received in August for aggravated battery to his father in connection with a May incident.

Part of Steffey's sentence was that he also get a mental health evaluation.
