Teen pleads guilty to trespass charge

URBANA — An Urbana teen who admitted entering a home in northwest Champaign against the wishes of its occupants has been sentenced to 30 months of probation.

Melvin L. Johnson, 19, whose last known address was in the 1100 block of South Lierman Avenue, pleaded guilty to criminal trespass to residence for entering a home in the 1600 block of Queensway Drive in Champaign on Nov. 30, knowing one or more people were present.

A more serious charge of home invasion was dismissed.

The state also terminated his probation in an unrelated battery case as part of his negotiated plea.

Police said Johnson had a dating relationship with a teenage girl at the home and was with another man when they tried to force their way in with a gun.

The co-defendant, George Ortiz, 29, is tentatively set to be tried in February.
