UI to ring chimes in Newtown observance

URBANA — Bells will ring at the University of Illinois at 9:30 a.m. Friday as part of a nationwide observance marking last week's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

The Altgeld chimes will strike 26 times — one for each person killed at the school.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy signed a proclamation earlier this week declaring today as a day of mourning in that state and asking residents to participate in a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. He also asked houses of worship and government buildings to ring chimes at that moment.

Malloy sent a letter to every U.S. governor asking each to consider joining Connecticut in marking the moment of silence.

"Let us all come together collectively to mourn the loss of far too many promising lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School," Malloy said in the letter. "Though we will never know the full measure of sorrow experienced by these families, we can let them know that we stand with them during this difficult time."
