Bus service to YMCA set to begin Monday

CHAMPAIGN — Area residents will be able to use the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District to get to the Stephens Family YMCA of Champaign County beginning Monday.

MTD spokeswoman Jan Kijowski announced Wednesday that service to the YMCA, 2501 Fields South Drive, C, will start Monday on two weekday routes, the 334 West Direct and the 14 Navy.

“There will be no weekend service at this time,” Kijowski said.

The 334 West Direct is a demand-response service that runs from 6:40 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Riders can call 255-8888 to arrange a pickup within the boundaries of the 334 West Direct area. A map of the area is at www.cumtd.com/maps-and-schedules/route/334-west-direct/weekday/daytime/map.

In addition, since the 334 West Direct route also serves Country Fair Shopping Center, riders can get on that vehicle at Country Fair at 6:57 a.m., 7:24 a.m., 7:50 a.m. or 8:20 a.m.; every 30 minutes from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.; or 4:32 p.m., 5:02 p.m., 5:36 p.m. or 6:10 p.m.

Kijowski said the 14 Navy route serves the YMCA with three trips between 4:40 and 6:40 p.m.

On school days when Unit 4 is in session, passengers on the afternoon 5W Green #2 Copper Ridge bus that serves Edison, Franklin and Jefferson middle schools may ask that the bus be diverted to drop them off at the YMCA for after-school programs.

Kijowski said the MTD will be monitoring the use of the YMCA service and hopes to develop a fixed route beginning in August.
