URBANA — An electoral board could decide Thursday whether Laura Sandefur gets to stay on the April ballot for Cunningham Township assessor.
Last week, incumbent Democrat Dan Stebbins challenged Sandefur's candidacy. He said Sandefur should be disqualified because she is a Democrat who filed for candidacy as an independent.
The challenge triggered a hearing on Sandefur's candidacy, which will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Urbana City Building, 400 S. Vine St.
Sandefur had filed for candidacy as a Democrat in November. She later withdrew because of what she called a clerical error on her paperwork when she listed the wrong address as her place of residence.
She filed again in December, this time as an independent, after the filing deadline for party-affiliated candidates had passed.
Sandefur currently serves as a Democrat on the Champaign County Board of Review.
Stebbins and Sandefur will both be allowed to present their evidence and arguments during Thursday's hearing. A board made up of Cunningham Township Clerk Phyllis Clark, Township Supervisor Carol Elliott and township board member Robert Lewis will vote on whether Sandefur will remain on the ballot.
If Sandefur is disqualified, Stebbins would be unopposed in the April 9 election for township assessor.
