Paxton park board OKs plans to build dog park

PAXTON — After months of deliberation, the park district board voted 4-3 Tuesday to formally approve plans to build a dog park at Coady Park.

"That's a big milestone for us to just get somebody to say, 'Yes, you can build here,'" said Paxton resident Jon Russell, who is among a group of residents known as the Paxton Dog Park Committee that had sought the dog park.

"We're thrilled. We're very happy about the decision."

The park board decided on one of three options for the size of the fenced-in dog park.

The dog park would cover 11/3 acres, spanning an area from behind the tennis court and to the west of the volleyball court and skate park.

Said Russell: "It's not quite as big as what we were hoping for, but it's a start. It's something we can work with."

The area includes the soon-to-be-removed hill that had been a popular sledding destination. The district's insurance provider has recommended the hill be removed for liability reasons.

The location of the dog park offers the option for expansion if the dog park is used on a frequent basis, according to the park board's treasurer, Steve Sample.

Tolono Village Board: Bar changing name, reopening this month

TOLONO — The Hometown Bar and Grill will be changing its name.

Owner Jignesh Panchal told the village board Tuesday that the business name will be changing to Sidetrack Pub and Sports Lounge. The village will change the business' liquor license to reflect the new name.

The bar has been closed for redecorating and renovations, Panchal said, and is scheduled to reopen on Jan. 24.

Trustee Greg Kingston expressed concerns about a sign outside of the bar advertising "beer pong." Kingston, an Urbana firefighter who works on the University of Illinois campus, said he has seen the result of such activities.

"That tends to lead to binge drinking," Kingston said. "It'll cause problems for our village."
