Five candidates to run for Catlin school board

CATLIN — Five candidiates will run for four seats on the school board in the April 9 election, Superintendent Gary Lewis said on Thursday.

The candidates include two incumbents and three challengers. Catlin school board members Perry Dable and Shane Meade are not running for re-election.

Incumbents Jim Chandler and Tricia Keith will run against challengers Dale Dutton, Travis Pearman and Andrea Van Leer for the four seats.

In other business, the two building principals said they had reviewed safety protocols with their staff and have reviewed some options to improve student safety.

Catlin High School Principal Kevin Thomas said he wanted to have the three main exterior doors at the high school and the two exterior doors at the gymnasium building fitted with magnetic locks that would respond to key fobs from students and faculty. Catlin Grade School Principal Beau Fretueg said he would like to have additional security cameras for the grade school building and school grounds.

Lewis said their suggestions were reasonable, and that school officials would explore them.

The board will hold its next regular meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 14.
