Scaffolding removed at Virginia; work on schedule

The Champaign Park District says its $7.5 million renovation of the Virginia Theatre is on schedule.

The scaffolding that was used to restore the auditorium's ceiling — including Spanish design canvases — was taken down earlier this month. Painters and plasterers are now restoring the side walls and the decorative plaster underneath the balcony.

In the coming weeks, the Virginia's concrete floor will be painted, in preparation for new seating which will be one of the last components of the renovation's third phase, which is costing about $5.5 million.

The park district says work should be finished by the end of March, in time for the 15th annual Ebertfest, April 17-21 .
