CHAMPAIGN — Firefighters were still trying to figure out Sunday night the cause of an early morning apartment building fire that displaced eight people.
No injuries were reported in the blaze that sparked before dawn Sunday in northwest Champaign.
According to a report, firefighters were sent at 5:03 a.m. Sunday to a 12-unit apartment building at 2401 High View Court, C. They saw fire and smoke venting onto the balcony from a third-floor apartment on the northwest corner.
Firefighters took water lines up a stairwell to get to the apartment on fire, while others performed seven balcony rescues and searched the rest of the building.
The fire was out shortly before 6 a.m.
On Sunday evening, firefighters said they had still not heard from investigators whether a cause had been determined.
Damage to the building and its contents was estimated at $100,000. The building is owned by Bryan Snyder.
Smoke detectors alerted many of those in the building.
