Broken sprinkler pipe causes ceiling to collapse at campus apartment

CHAMPAIGN — A broken sprinkler pipe caused a ceiling to collapse at a campus apartment on Tuesday afternoon.

Nobody was hurt, but the University of Illinois emergency dean was contacted to help students displaced by the incident find a place to stay.

According to a Champaign Fire Department report, a sprinkler pipe broke in the attic of a building at 202 E. Chalmers Street, C., at 12:28 p.m. Tuesday.

The ceiling collapsed above one apartment, and water from the pipe poured into it.

Water also leaked into two other apartments.

Fire department officials hadn't yet made dollar estimates on the damage Tuesday evening.
