DANVILLE — A man escaped injury Tuesday when his home on the south side of Danville caught fire shortly after 5 p.m., according to Danville fire officials.

A neighbor called 911 to report the fire at the one-story wood-frame house in the 200 block of South Forrest Street, according to Public Safety Director Larry Thomason.

A large portion of the house on the southwest corner of Forrest and Bridge streets — one block west of Arby's on South Gilbert Street — was engulfed in flames when the fire department arrived shortly after 5 p.m., according to Thomason. He said the only occupant of the house at the time, Melvin Truex, was already safely outside. He said flames were shooting through the roof at one point.

Firefighters had the blaze out within a half hour. Thomason said investigators will be on the scene trying to determine the cause of the fire.
