Traffic interrupted on Springfield Avenue for gas line break

CHAMPAIGN — A break in a gas line to a home in west Champaign interrupted traffic on a major thoroughfare for several hours Saturday afternoon.

Champaign Fire Lt. Mike King said firefighters were sent to Springfield between McKinley and Ridgeway avenues at 1:05 p.m. for a natural gas leak.

Fire crews stood by until about 4:35 p.m., when Ameren crews reported having the situation under control, King said.

King said there was a water company crew in that area digging about the time that the gas line leak to a home on the south side of Springfield was reported.

Police blocked traffic in both directions on Springfield Avenue while the repairs were going on.
