Cannabis tosser sentenced to probation

URBANA — An Urbana man who was pitching cannabis out the window of his home as police came to do a court-ordered search has been sentenced to 30 months of probation.

Dennis Atkins, 30, of the 900 block of North Broadway Avenue, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to deliver cannabis.

Assistant State’s Attorney Dan Clifton said that on July 28, 2011, Urbana police went to his home with a search warrant looking for cannabis.

As they were coming in, he was tossing cannabis and cash out a window, which police recovered, Clifton said.

Although police found just over a pound of cannabis both inside and outside the apartment, Clifton allowed Atkins to plead guilty to a lesser charge.

Clifton said Atkins’ only prior conviction was in 2001 in the state of Washington for robbery.
