Champaign man arrested for armed robbery

URBANA — A Champaign man is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $150,000 bond following his arrest in connection with an armed robbery over the weekend.

James Estes, 36, who listed an address in the 700 block of Tawney Court, Champaign, pleaded innocent on Monday to one count of armed robbery and one count of armed habitual criminal.

According to a police report, a woman reported that a man had offered her money for sex and then held her at gunpoint in a motel room at the Economy Motel, 914 W. Bloomington Road, C, after 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

The report said the man then robber her of her wallet, identification card, Social Security card and clothing and then drove way.

Police got a description of the man's car and found it. After police pulled it over, they found a loaded Jennings .38-caliber semiautomatic handgun in the center console of the vehicle and arrested the driver, identified as Estes.

According to the report, the victim later identified Estes as the man who had robbed her.

Estes' next court appearance was set for March 26.
