Green Street to be squeezed for months for new apartment building

CHAMPAIGN — Look for traffic on Green Street to be squeezed as preparations for a new apartment building get under way this month.

Beginning Monday, a portion of the westbound lane between First and Second streets will be closed to accommodate construction of a five-story apartment building at 112 E. Green St., C.

The building will be erected at the northwest corner of Second and Green streets — the former site of the White Horse Inn.

The lane closure is expected to last until Nov. 1, with westbound traffic being redirected into the center turn lane of Green Street.

The closed lane will be reopened for certain events, such as the Illinois Marathon, and for student move-out and student move-in at the University of Illinois, according to a release from the city of Champaign and the contractor, Broeren Russo Construction.
