Centennial students deliver notes on Valentine's Day

CHAMPAIGN — Three Centennial High School students did their best to make sure all their fellow classmates knew they were loved on Valentine's Day.

Centennial seniors Elizabeth Polinski and Elizabeth Fager and sophomore Jacob Jones arrived at school early on Thursday to put sticky notes with the handwritten words "You are loved" on the student lockers.

Fager said she and some of her friends were inspired by something they saw on the website Tumblr.

"We saw that someone put up notes saying 'You're beautiful' on all the lockers at another school, so several of us thought it would be a nice touch for Valentine's Day," Fager said.

"Not everybody at school gets a carnation on Valentine's Day, so people often get sad and lonely. When I heard about the idea, I was totally on board."

Fager said that she, Polinski and Jones started placing the notes on the lockers at 6 a.m. Thursday, and it took them until about 7:50 a.m. to complete the task.

She said additional students helped them to write the notes.

Fager said she and her friends got positive feedback for their efforts.

"Several students talked about how cool it was," Fager said. "Many of them thanked us.

"We saw people taking off the notes and putting them on their shirts to wear throughout the day. It was a lot of fun."
