LeRoy man dies after truck crashes into a tree

DOWNS — A LeRoy man died in a single vehicle crash late Thursday night in rural McLean County.

According to a McLean County coroner’s report, state police, the Downs Fire Department and Downs EMS were called to the site of a crash on U.S. 150 near Downs shortly after 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling said that a pickup truck driven by Chad R. Baker, 39, of LeRoy, was traveling west on U.S. 150 when the truck left the highway and crashed into a tree at 102 North Highway.

Kimmerling said that Mr. Baker, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

She said preliminary findings from an autopsy performed on Friday indicate that Mr. Baker died from multiple injuries, including trauma to the neck, chest and pelvic area.

“There was no evidence of a medical event that precipitated the crash,” Kimmerling said. “Forensic toxicology studies will be requested. A cellphone analysis as well as a mechanical inspection of the truck will occur in an attempt to answer why Mr. Baker left the roadway and where he was traveling to on Thursday evening.”

She said state police are helping her office with the reconstruction of the crash.
