Savoy backs two projects
SAVOY — Board members backed continuing two of the three major projects.
The second-story addition to the fire station and the new public works building will move forward, while the installation of new soccer fields at Colbert Park was tabled for future discussion.
The addition to the fire station will comprise a new conference room, library, living room space with a kitchenette, restrooms, fitness room, locker space and four small bunkrooms. A second interior stairway will also be added.
The second major project to move forward is the construction of a new public works building to be located just southeast of the current Savoy Municipal Center. The new 12,400-square-foot building will house a conference room, break room, locker room, a large vehicle bay, space for the parks and grounds department, space for the streets and sewers department, a vehicle maintenance area and a drive-through wash bay, as well as added office and storage space. The building is being constructed to allow for future expansion to the north.
After approving two major projects, the board was reluctant to move forward with the addition of two regulation-sized soccer fields in Colbert Park.
The soccer fields are estimated to cost $180,000. Roughly one third of the cost would be for 4,500 cubic square yards of topsoil needed to elevate and level the ground for proper drainage. Construction on the project is not planned until late summer. The board will revisit the topic in a future meeting.
