URBANA — The new documentary, "Mannie Jackson: From Boxcar to Boardrooms," will air at 8:30 p.m. Monday on the Big Ten Network.
Through basketball, Jackson rose from poverty in southern Illinois to become the first African-American captain of the University of Illinois basketball team. He played for the Harlem Globetrotters and subsequently became chairman of the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame.
He left basketball to break barriers in the business world, becoming a senior executive at Honeywell and one of the first African-Americans to serve on multiple Fortune 500 boards of directors.
When he purchased the Harlem Globetrotters in 1992, he rescued the team from bankruptcy and sealed its place in African-American history.
Jackson is now a philanthropist who helps young people.

Jackson and his wife, Cathy, attended a preview screening of the new documentary Feb. 2 at the Art Theater in Champaign.
