Champaign man charged with Circle K burglary

URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly broke into a convenience store in west Champaign over the weekend has been charged with burglary.

A Champaign police report said about 4 a.m. Saturday, a man was delivering papers to the Circle K, 1301 S. Mattis Ave., when he saw the front door had been smashed. He saw a man standing on the southeast side of the building who then headed south on Mattis Avenue.

Police reviewed the store's surveillance video and noted that the man near the building was bald and wearing a blue coat with a white hooded sweatshirt underneath it. The video showed he stole cigarettes.

Officers saw that the glass door was damaged and pulled from the frame. There was also blood on the door, on the floor behind the counter and on a cigarette rack.

Officers found James Lee White, 45, who listed an address in the 1800 block of Melinda Drive, walking in the 1500 block of West Kirby Avenue and tried to talk to him. He refused to comply with their commands to show his hands or get down on the ground. As they struggled with him, they could see that his hand was cut and bleeding.

Police said White also appeared to be very intoxicated and in possession of eight packs of Newport cigarettes and four packs of L&M cigarettes in the sleeve of his coat.

If convicted of the burglary, he faces penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison.
