Champaign parolee facing drug charge

URBANA — A 58-year-old Champaign man on parole for a 2002 conviction for delivery of a controlled substance has been charged with another drug-related offense.

Assistant State's Attorney Scott Bennett said Roger Gill, who listed an address in the 1200 block of North Market Street, was arrested about 4:30 a.m. Saturday after Champaign police first noticed him driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

The report said an officer spotted Gill driving going west in the 1300 block of West University Avenue, where the traffic is supposed to run only east.

Bennett said when the sergeant tried to stop the vehicle, it wouldn't, despite the officer's use of light and sirens. The vehicle then made several turns going very slowly then speeding up, making what amounted to a big circle, before coming to a stop in the spot near where the officer first tried to stop Gill.

In the spot in the road where the vehicle had sped up, the officer found a bag that contained nine individually packed rocks of suspected crack cocaine and another two loose rocks in the road. The rocks weighed a total of 2.8 grams and field-tested positive for cocaine.

Gill admitted he had been drinking and had glassy eyes, Bennett said. Gill failed field sobriety tests, but when he did a portable breath test, it did not register any alcohol. Bennett said police then arrested him for driving under the influence of drugs.

On Tuesday, Gill was charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. The charge is normally a Class 1 felony, but Gill is eligible for sentencing as a Class X offender (six to 60 years in prison) due to prior convictions. Bennett said Gill's record dates to 1982 and includes at least eight convictions for drug-related offenses. He was also charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence.

Judge Richard Klaus left his bond at the $35,000 set in court over the weekend and told him to be back in court March 5.
