Teen plea will move case to juvenile court

URBANA — An Urbana teen who had been charged as an adult with sex crimes has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in juvenile court.

The teen, who listed an address in the 100 block of Grossback Drive, pleaded guilty before Judge Heidi Ladd Tuesday to a single count of aggravated battery in connection with an incident that occurred Oct. 22 in Urbana.

Assistant State's Attorney Scott Bennett said on that day two girls, ages 13 and 12, were with the teen at the Urbana Free Library. They left together and when they were in the 400 block of East Green Street, the teen directed the girls to an outside stairwell, telling them he wanted to show them something.

He then allegedly exposed himself to the girls and touched one of them without the girl's permission. The girls went home and one told her mother what had happened and police were contacted.

The teen, 15 at the time, originally was charged as an adult. Bennett agreed to allow him to plead guilty as a juvenile to the aggravated battery charge. The adult charges of criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual assault will be dismissed when Ladd sentences him on March 28.
