Heavy snow possible early in the week; mild weekend ahead

CHAMPAIGN — The National Weather Service says more snow and cold is on the way for the early part of the work week, but conditions will grow milder by Friday.

Light snow could begin falling along the Interstate 74 corridor Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Early accumulations could total up to an inch before the precipitation begins mixing with rain.

The main period of snow is expected to develop later Monday evening and continue through Tuesday. The National Weather Service is forecasting anywhere between four and six inches could accumulate along and north of I-74. Lower accumulations are expected to the south — the weather service is calling for two to four inches in areas from Mattoon to Paris.

Those totals may be lower if the snow mixes with rain. The National Weather Service also warns that there is uncertainty regarding the track of the winter storm system and where the heaviest snow will fall, so travelers are urged to monitor forecasts for updates.

High temperatures are expected to hit 38 degrees on Monday and 33 degrees on Tuesday. Overnight lows are expected to be in the mid- to upper-20s.

Clouds will begin clearing on Wednesday, when the National Weather Service is predicting a high temperature of 35 degrees. The overnight low is expected to be around 23 degrees.

Thursday will begin a warming trend that could last through next weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Thursday's high could hit 40, and forecasters are predicting sunny conditions with temperatures in the low 50s from Friday through Sunday.
