Teen charged with possession of stolen vehicle
URBANA — A Champaign teenager who allegedly wrecked a Rantoul woman's car Monday has been criminally charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.
A Rantoul police report said a teenage girl living in the 100 block of East Sangamon Avenue had friends spend the night Saturday while her mother was out of town.
During the early morning hours Sunday, Rashad J. Smith, 17, who listed an address in the 900 block of Frank Drive, Champaign, allegedly took the teen's mother's car keys without permission and went for a drive. While out, he allegedly crashed the car into a building not far from the teen's home, heavily damaging it. He was able to drive it back to the teen's home.
Rantoul police got involved the next day when the car owner returned home and discovered the damage. When confronted, Smith admitted he took the car but denied driving it when the car crashed, the police report said.
Possession of a stolen vehicle is a Class 2 felony carrying penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison upon conviction.
Smith is being held in lieu of $25,000 bond. He was told to be back in court April 23.
