Arrests made in connection with cab robbery in Rantoul
RANTOUL — Two Rantoul teens arrested Friday night in connection with the holdup of a cab driver in that village are expected to be formally charged on Monday.
Rantoul police said a cab driver for Green Cab called police at 7:49 p.m. Friday to report he had been robbed.
The cab driver said he picked up a passenger in the 400 block of Marco Drive. After the taxi left the pickup location, the passenger said he needed to return to the 400 block of Marco Drive.
While the driver was making a turn, he felt something in the back of his head. He turned around and saw the passenger had covered his face and had a gun.
The cab driver grabbed the gun, which turned out to be an Airsoft pistol. The passenger then punched the driver in the face, got out of the cab and ran toward Marco Drive. Police said nothing was taken.
Rantoul police later arrested a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old boy in connection with the holdup. The older teen was taken to the county jail and released after posting $1,000 cash bond Saturday afternoon.
State’s Attorney Julia Rietz said she would decide Monday if the 17-year-old should be charged as an adult or a juvenile. Police declined to identify the youths.
The cab driver was treated and released by paramedics, according to the report.
