Drug arrests made in southeast Urbana

URBANA — Police arrested two men Friday as part of an ongoing campaign to deter suspected drug sales in southeast Urbana.

“This is all part of our Woodstone, Scottswood area cleanup,” said Urbana police Investigator Matt Quinley of the arrests of Ernest Brown and Craig Green.

Brown, 43, who listed an address in the 1000 block of South Austin Street, Urbana, was arrested about noon Friday as he drove in the 1500 block of East Washington Street in Urbana, said Quinley.

Police were stopping Brown to arrest him for two previous deliveries of controlled substances that he allegedly made in the last two to three months.

Quinley said at the time of his arrest, Brown was carrying an unmarked bottle of methadone so was preliminarily charged with possession of a controlled substance. Formal charges for the previous alleged heroin sales were expected to be filed Monday.

Quinley said police also arrested Green, 38, who listed an address in the 0-100 block of Rainbow Court, Urbana, after a search Friday of his home turned up about a gram of heroin.

“With heroin, it’s rare you find somebody with a lot of it because it sells by the tenth of a gram,” said Quinley, noting that a gram equals 10 separate doses at a street value of about $20 per hit or $200 a gram.

Quinley said Green had also been under investigation by his department for the last couple of months.

Both men posted bond Saturday, were released from the county jail and were expected to be back in court Monday.
