Rantoul teen charged as an adult for holdup of cab driver
URBANA — A teenager arrested in connection with the holdup of a cab driver in that village over the weekend is being charged as an adult.
Raymon Haugabrok, 17, who listed an address in the 400 block of Marco Drive, Rantoul, pleaded innocent on Monday to one count of attempted armed robbery and one count of aggravated battery.
Rantoul police said a cab driver for Green Cab called police at 7:49 p.m. Friday to report he had been robbed.
The cab driver said he picked up a passenger in the 400 block of Marco Drive. After the taxi left the location, the passenger said he needed to return to the 400 block of Marco Drive.
While the driver was making a turn, he felt something in the back of his head. He turned around and saw the passenger had covered his face and had a gun.
The cab driver grabbed the gun, which turned out to be an Airsoft pistol. The passenger then punched the driver in the face, got out of the cab and ran toward Marco Drive.
Police said nothing was taken.
Rantoul police arrested Haugabrok and a 15-year-old boy in connection with the holdup.
Haugabrok was released from the Champaign County Jail after posting $1,000 cash bond on Saturday afternoon.
Haugabrok's next court appearance was set for May 7.
No information was available on Monday on the 15-year-old boy's juvenile case.
