Urbana official due back in court in April in DUI case

URBANA — An Urbana city official arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident last week is due back in court April 12.

Mike Monson, 55, who listed an address in the 1000 block of Kerr Avenue, was charged last Thursday in Champaign County Circuit Court with misdemeanor driving under the influence in connection with an accident that happened about 8:20 p.m. on March 5.

An Urbana police report said the accident happened near Kerr and Carroll avenues, not far from Monson's home, when a 24-year-old woman turned on a snow-covered street and hit Monson's car on the driver's side.

Monson told police he was about to turn into the parking lot for the apartment complex when he was hit by the woman. He then got out of his car and left it in the 1000 block of Carroll and walked home.

Police found him there about 50 minutes after the accident and arrested him following admissions that he had been drinking. He was also issued tickets for leaving the scene of a property damage accident and for not having valid insurance.

Monson, who is employed as Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing's chief of staff, is represented by Urbana attorney Brett Olmstead.
