DANVILLE — The Danville High School show choir groups must raise $20,000 in just six weeks to pay hotel, transportation and some meal costs for the 115 students who will be representing Danville at the Show Choir National competition in Chicago next month.
Kassi Krause, the vocal music director at Danville High, said the show choir students and boosters have raised $187,000 over the last two years to cover regular season expenses as well as costs associated with the groups' recent trip to the FAME regional show choir competition in Los Angeles where both the Delegation, the mixed show choir, and Contemporaires, the all-female group, finished runners-up, qualifying them for the national competition next month in Chicago.
So, Krause said the groups have exhausted all of their fundraising efforts to get through the regular competition season and the California trip. And now, Krause said, she and the boosters have estimated the bare minimum to get 115 students to Chicago for two nights will be an additional $20,000 with nationals just six weeks away.
"We are just trying to do the bare minimum to get the kids there," said Krause, who explained that they're searching for quick fundraising ideas but have also set up a web page on an online fundraising site where anyone can make any level of donation.
She said she and the boosters held a meeting Tuesday night to determine the cost and brainstorm fund-raising ideas. She said they will likely do a couple fundraising auctions, but the website will be for those who would rather donate than buy something.
Krause said the groups also don't want to interfere with fundraisers other student groups have under way at the high school, and the school district itself cannot cover the tab. She said the district is already very supportive of the program.
Krause said to run a competitive show choir program takes money for costumes and custom arrangements and travel.
The web site has already generated donations, and Krause said one of the schools they compete against in Decatur has even donated.
