Rantoul man arraigned on charge of criminal sexual assault

URBANA — A Rantoul man who allegedly had sex with a teenage girl against her will two years ago has been charged with criminal sexual assault.

Rantoul police last week arrested Demetris Mason, 28, whose last known address was in the 200 block of Winding Lane, on a warrant that had been issued about a month before.

Rantoul police Sgt. Marcus Beach said Mason allegedly had sex in February 2011 with a teenage girl at an apartment in Rantoul at a time when she was passed out from having smoked cannabis, The girl gave birth in October 2011.

The case came to the attention of Rantoul police the following May. They interviewed the teen and she told them about smoking cannabis with him and others in February 2011 and how she awoke to find him on top of her.

In February of this year, the state's attorney's office filed the criminal sexual assault charge against Mason.

He was arraigned last week and is due back in court April 23. He continues to be held in the county jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.

If convicted, he faces four to 15 years in prison.
