CATLIN — School officials voted this week to reduce the district staff by six employees, and to reduce the hours worked by two other employees.
Catlin school board members eliminated two secretarial positions at Catlin High School, eliminated two personal aides, one classroom aide, and a junior high social studies teacher. In addition, a full-time art teacher who worked throughout the district will now only teach two classes each day at the high school and one class each day at the junior high, and an outdoor maintenance worker who had been working up to 1,000 hours each year will now work up to only 600 hours each year.
The board also accepted the retirement notification of Kay Warner, a longtime personal aide in the district.
To cut expenses, the board voted in February to eliminate the separate high school principal position, and to have Superintendent Gary Lewis take over the duties as principal of Catlin High and its 169 students.
Current Catlin High Principal Kevin Thomas has been offered a reclassification as a social studies teacher with the district.
The board is cutting spending in supplies and professional services in the district by 10 percent and is also considering eliminating the fifth- and sixth-grade basketball program. Lewis has said that his goal is to cut $300,000 to $350,000 in expenses this year.
