Five injured in west Champaign crash

CHAMPAIGN — Five people were taken to an area hospital Tuesday afternoon following an intersection collision in west Champaign.

Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said at 2 p.m. officers were sent to the intersection of University Avenue and Country Fair Drive, where they found two vehicles crashed in the middle of the intersection.

Dunn said Melinda Hall, 43, of Oreana was driving a Honda CRV east on University, coming off Interstate 72, when she allegedly ran a red light and hit a Chevrolet HHR that was headed north on Country Fair Drive.

Dunn said the HHR driver, Matthew Murphy, 39, of Champaign, had a green light.

Murphy, three other occupants of his vehicle and Hall were taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for treatment of what were described as minor injuries. Murphy and Hall were treated and released. The names of the other occupants in Murphy's vehicle were not disclosed.

Dunn said traffic had to be detoured around the intersection for about 25 minutes.

Hall was expected to be ticketed for disobeying a traffic control signal, Dunn said.
