MAHOMET — A Mahomet man who was target shooting in the country with friends was accidentally shot in the leg Saturday afternoon.
A spokesman for Carle Foundation Hospital said Howard Yu, 27, was in fair condition after being shot below the right knee.
Champaign County Sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Vercler said about 10 men were shooting on the property of one of the men out in the country north and east of Mahomet about 3 p.m. when the .45-caliber handgun of one of the men malfunctioned.
"He was trying to clear it. It fell to the ground. A round discharged and hit (Yu) in the leg," said Vercler.
"A lot of them had prior military experience so when it happened, they treated the victim. All of them were extremely calm. Everyone had the same story that it was a total accident," said Vercler, who took statements at the scene and later checked in on Yu at Carle.
