Military news: Chapin named NCO of the Year

Jet engine mechanic Tech Sgt. Zachary Chapin was named the 434th Air Refueling Wing NCO of the Year for 2012.

Chapin was responsible for 128 airfield drivers, 19 vehicles, 250 pieces of equipment and $12 million worth of assets. As part of that responsibility, Chapin designed six lesson plans and equipment recertification programs. He initiated five quality deficiency reports that recovered more than $50,000 and saved over 100 hours in wasted labor.

He deployed twice as a flight chief to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey where he maintained an equipment in-commission rate of 98 percent, and once to Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, where he optimized equipment support and readiness.

Chapin is a 2000 graduate of Centennial High School, and a 2004 graduate of the University of Illinois He is the son of Richard and Susan Chapin, and the grandson of Eunice Chapin.

Estrada graduates from basic training

Army Pvt. Nikolai M. Estrada has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Estrada is the son of Brenda Kammin of Sidney.

He is a 2012 graduate of Unity High School, Tolono.
