Man faces weapons charges

UPDATED 4:30 p.m. Tuesday

URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a gun and later fired it in the air was arrested Monday.

Champaign County sheriff's Lt. Ed Ogle said about 6 p.m. Monday, deputies were called to the 2700 block of East High Street in Urbana.

A woman living there said that her boyfriend, Benny Williams Jr., 57, who listed an address in the 1300 block of Lockraven Road, arrived at her house intoxicated.

The two were arguing when Williams allegedly pulled a small handgun out of his pocket, then put it back in and left the woman's house. Once outside, she heard a gunshot.

She called deputies, who found Williams at her home and arrested him for unlawful possession of weapons by a felon, reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated assault.

Williams was charged on Tuesday with aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and reckless discharge of a firearm.

Williams is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $50,000 bond. His next court appearance was set for May 21.
