URBANA — An Urbana man who allegedly groped a woman with whom he was arguing has been charged in Champaign County Circuit Court with criminal sexual abuse and unlawful restraint.
Melvin L. Johnson, 20, who listed an address in the 1100 block of East Colorado Avenue, was arrested about 2:15 a.m. Thursday for an incident that occurred in the 500 block of West Elm Street.
Urbana police investigator Dave Smysor said officers were sent to that block because a woman was screaming and hysterical on a man's porch.
Officers located the 18-year-old woman and Johnson across the street from each other. He was bleeding heavily from a cut to his arm and she was crying hysterically, Smysor said.
Johnson initially told police he fell on ice and cut his arm on the road.
The woman said that Johnson had been drinking and came to her apartment where they got into an argument.
He allegedly held her against a wall, choked her and put his hands down her pants, inappropriately touching her.
That precipitated a fight between them that resulted in Johnson falling on a glass table that shattered, cutting his arm. The woman then ran from the apartment crying and that's when a neighbor called police.
