Urbana man's death an apparent suicide

URBANA — An Urbana man died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head early Saturday in the parking lot of a grocery store.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said H. Clifford Heaton, 89, who lived on West Evergreen Court, was pronounced dead in the parking lot of the County Market store, 1819 S. Philo Road, U, at 2:45 a.m.

Urbana police Sgt. Andy Hewkin said police were called to the east Urbana grocery store at 2:07 a.m. to a report of shots fired in the parking lot.

When they arrived, they found a deceased man leaning against a pallet of mulch, who had a gunshot wound to the head, Hewkin said.

“We’re treating it as a suicide,” said Northrup. “Why he did it, we still haven’t answered that question.”

Northrup said Mr. Heaton was living with his wife a few blocks west of the grocery store. He said she was stunned by the news.

“We believe he walked there,” Northrup said, adding that the gun found at the scene was Mr. Heaton’s.
