Military news: UI student is state's veteran of the month

U.S. Navy veteran and University of Illinois student Elizabeth Ambros is Illinois' "veteran of the month" for March.

The award from the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs honors veterans who serve their communities.

Ambros, a Savoy resident, is secretary of the Illini Veterans, a student group. Every week, she updates members on benefits, employment and job training opportunities.

Her volunteer activities include participating in care package drives for Illinois National Guard units and raising funds for veterans with housing needs.

She served as a Fleet Marine Force corpsman for more than six years, including an assignment as the senior medical provider in more than 60 combat missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
