Staff member helps juvenile who apparently was trying to harm himself

URBANA — Joe Gordon credits a staff member at the Champaign County Juvenile Detention Center doing a routine check for helping a teen boy detainee who apparently was trying to harm himself Tuesday afternoon.

Gordon, Champaign County's director of probation and court services, said a 16-year-old boy being held at the detention center wrapped a T-shirt around his neck, tied the shirt to a sitting stool in his room and then twisted the shirt tighter around himself.

Gordon said staff members at the center are trained to do regular checks on the detainees about every 15 minutes or so.

One staff member found the teen boy on the floor in his room at about 3:40 p.m. Tuesday.

While the boy was initially unresponsive, Gordon said, the teen was soon alert and sitting on his bed.

The teen, who was not identified, was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for treatment. No information was available on his condition.

"We have regular checks to monitor the people here as a precautionary measure," Gordon said on Tuesday afternoon. "We check every 15 minutes or so because a lot can happen in a short period of time. Everyone on our staff here has been trained on suicide prevention, so they know what to do if something like this happens."
