Graduate conference to focus on landscapes

URBANA — The public is invited to "Landscapes: Performing Space & Culture: A Graduate Conference," taking place Friday and Saturday at the University of Illinois.

The conference was organized by graduate students in the UI's theater history and criticism program and the Theatre Student Organization.

The keynote panel and discussion will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Knight Auditorium of the Spurlock Museum, 600 S. Gregory St., U, and feature:

— Heather S. Nathans of the Department of Theatre, University of Maryland.

— Joshua Takano Chambers-Letson of the Department of Performance Studies, Northwestern University.

— Jodi Byrd of the American Indian Studies Program and Department of English, UI.

— Dianne Harris, director of the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities and a professor in the departments of Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Art History and History, UI.

— Valleri Hohman, discussion moderator, of the UI Department of Theatre.

The interdisciplinary conference in the arts, humanities and social sciences will explore the concept of landscapes as spatial and cultural sites with particular interest in elements that are theatrical and involve performance.
