Portraits Project making stop at University YMCA

URBANA — The Illini 4000 will host the Portraits Gallery from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the University YMCA to share the stories of how cancer has affected America. At 7 p.m., the directors of the Portraits Project will give a presentation.

The Illini 4000 — students who tour the country on bicycles each summer to raise money for cancer research — will present photographs, video and text on people they met on their cross-country rides who are affected by cancer. This is the second presentation of the Portraits Project in Champaign-Urbana.

Each team member on the cross-country tour conducts interviews or takes portraits of cancer patients, surviv- ors, caretakers and anyone else willing to share their story.

"These stories share insight into their heartfelt insights as they gain new focus on family, friendships and community," reads a news release from Illini 4000. "There is no agenda, and the interviews always begin with: 'In your own words, tell us about your experience with cancer.'"
