Champaign man accused of fondling woman
URBANA — A Champaign man was charged with a sex crime Thursday after he allegedly fondled an employee of his apartment complex in his apartment.
Shawn Banks, 38, who lives in the Countrybrook Apartments in the 2600 block of West Springfield Avenue, was arrested Wednesday afternoon for allegedly groping a 21-year-old woman working there.
A Champaign police report said the woman's boss had asked her to notify tenants of a rent increase by knocking on doors, reading the notice and asking the resident to initial the notice.
The report said the woman was reading the notice to Banks when he interrupted her, acted as if he didn't understand what she was saying, and asked her to step inside. After she did, he closed the door behind her and locked three locks on the door.
The woman didn't notice the locked door at the time, and continued reading the form to him.
He then leaned into her as if he were reading over her shoulder. When she asked him to sign the notice, he pulled a condom out of his pocket and said "I'll sign that if you'll sign this."
The woman declared she was leaving and turned to see the door locked.
Banks then allegedly grabbed her around the waist from behind, pressing his body into her back side. He then reached around and rubbed her through her pants. She jammed an elbow into his torso and was able to unlock the door and get out, the report said.
When police questioned Banks, he said he had asked her out. He admitted he locked one of the locks but not the other two.
Judge Richard Klaus set Banks bond at $50,000 and told him to be back in court with his attorney April 18.
