Champaign man gets probation for hitting woman

URBANA — A Champaign man who admitted hitting the mother of his child was sentenced Thursday to 18 months of probation.

In return for Durrell Brigham's guilty plea to domestic battery with a prior domestic battery conviction, a more serious case of residential burglary was dismissed.

Brigham, 26, whose last known address was in the 1500 block of North Mattis Avenue, admitted that on Dec. 30, he punched his child's mother in the head at her home in the 1700 block of Princeton Drive.

He was also sentenced to 54 days in jail and given credit for time already served. He was also ordered to have no contact with the woman or her home.

The burglary charge that was dismissed alleged he broke into that same woman's home on Aug. 27.

Assistant State's Attorney Dan Clifton said Brigham had prior convictions for domestic battery, home invasion and resisting a peace officer.
