Champaign man gets prison time for gun possession

URBANA — A 25-year-old Champaign man with a prior gun-related conviction has been sentenced to prison for another.

Joseph Carter, who listed an address in the 600 block of Crescent Drive, pleaded guilty before Judge Heidi Ladd earlier this week to aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon and was sentenced to 41/2 years in prison.

Assistant State's Attorney Dan Clifton said on Oct. 13, Champaign police responded to a call of shots fired in the area of North Hickory Street and East Bradley Avenue and found Carter in the driver's seat of a vehicle.

Under his seat was a loaded .45-caliber Colt semi-automatic handgun.

Clifton said Carter has two prior Champaign County convictions from 2005 for theft and aggravated discharge of a firearm. The convictions preclude him from possessing a gun.
