Harris named interim chancellor at an Arizona community college

TUCSON, Ariz. — An Arizona community college has hired former Parkland College President Zelema Harris as its interim chancellor.

The governing board of Pima Community College in Tucson, Ariz., voted unanimously earlier this week to appoint Harris as interim chancellor, effective April 15.

Harris will remain at the post until a permanent chancellor is chosen.

"I'm committed to doing everything I can to get people into the door but not only that, to ensure that they have the opportunity to be successful," Harris said in a written release.

Harris served as Parkland College's president for 16 years, retiring in 2006. A year later, she became the chancellor at St. Louis Community College system. In 2011, she retired from the four-campus system in Missouri and moved to Decatur.

Brenda Even, chairman of the Pima Community College governing board, said Harris was a "superb fit" for the college and has the experience and qualifications to lead the college into the future.

"We look forward to having Dr. Harris with us as we all pull together," she said.
