UI police investigating campus robbery; similar incidents occur in C-U
URBANA — University of Illinois police are asking for the public's help in identifying four men who battered and stole a victim's phone outside of Hopkins and Forbes halls early Saturday morning.
According to a crime alert from the UI police department, the victim was walking near the dormitories in the 200 block of East Peabody Drive in Champaign at about 2:40 a.m. Saturday. The victim believed the four suspects entered a smaller, dark-colored, older, four-door vehicle and drove north on First Street from the area of Stadium Drive.
Two similar incidents occured in both Champaign and Urbana around the same time. At about 2:22 a.m., a male victim was battered by a group of five people in the 400 block of South Busey Avenue, U, "for no apparent reason," according to the report.
Then, just before 3 a.m., two people walking near 50 E. Chalmers St., C, were battered by a group of four people.
The UI, Urbana and Champaign police departments are working together to investigate all three incidents. Police say they do not know if the three events were related, but they are asking that anyone with information call the UI police department at 217-333-1216 or Champaign County Crime Stoppers at 217-373-TIPS.
Police have posted video footage of four people they believe may have been involved.
