Ameren crew on site of gas leak in Champaign

Updated 10:45 a.m.

CHAMPAIGN — An Ameren Illinois crew is on the scene of a gas leak Monday morning in the 200 block of West Columbia Avenue in Champaign.

Ameren spokesman Leigh Morris said the leak was caused by a contractor, and the damaged main serves 15 buildings.

Morris said the crew will install a bypass that will allow most buildings in the area to keep their gas service, and then repair the main itself. The street is blocked off while the crew works.

Morris said he expects that work will be done by the end of the day Monday.
