Man gets two years conditional discharge for plea to public indecency

URBANA — A Champaign man arrested last fall for allegedly molesting a teenage boy has been sentenced to two years of conditional discharge.

Steven Cowger, 34, whose last known address was in the 2000 block of Moreland Boulevard, pleaded guilty last month in Champaign County Circuit Court to public indecency, a misdemeanor.

In return, more serious charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and possession of child pornography alleging he committed a sex act with a 15-year-old boy and possessed a sexually explicit photo of the boy on his phone were dismissed.

Cowger was arrested Nov. 24 after being found in a car in northeast Urbana with the Urbana teen, whom he had met through an Internet site.

Are you serious?  A 34 year old man lures a fifteen year old boy from an internet site and sexually assaults him; and, his punishment is conditional discharge???????  The 34 year old man does not have to report to a probabion officer or register as a sex offender; and, if he sucessfully completes his conditional discharge there will be no record of it????  Seriously??  Apparently the SA's office is serious on crimes against children; because he pled guilty to public indecency!  WOW!!!  I wonder which SA is more interested in getting a guilty plea for his/her stats instead of protecting our children from the next child predator because this 34 year old man will do this again in the future.

I hate to rain on your rage parade, but I read this and assume that it was not a good case.

Carry on with the outrage.
