Smitley wins in Pesotum

PESOTUM — Current village President Cheryl Smitley went out to lunch with friends on Wednesday to celebrate her election victory over former village President Timothy Lecher on Tuesday.

"I'm thrilled," said Smitley, who defeated Lecher by a 75-33 margin. "I'm glad we have the same board and will be able to continue building on things. I think the fact I won by so much was a statement in itself. I talked to some of the board members individually last night, and they were happy."

Smitley has been acting as village president for a year and a half, taking over after Tim Schultz resigned.

Smitley, a retired high school teacher, said the village board will likely lay out its plans for the next four years at an upcoming study session.

"We'll talk about the things we want to accomplish," she said. "A lot of it has to do with what people want. It's a very responsive board."

Smitley said the board will start doing research on getting a sanitary sewer system in town and on what grants may be available to fund that.

"We continue with plans for updating streets and sidewalks," she said. "We've made improvements to the park and added lights to the pavilion. We want to see the park used."
