Driver dies of her injuries

URBANA — A woman who lost control of her car on Interstate 72 Saturday night died of her injuries early Sunday morning.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup reported that Ramona S. Dowdy, 50, of Monticello was pronounced dead just before 1 a.m. Sunday at Carle Foundation Hospital.

Dowdy was traveling east on I-72 near Bondville at about 9:15 p.m. Saturday when she apparently lost control of her 2000 Pontiac Sunfire and went off the left side of the roadway, according to Illinois State Police. She over-corrected, crossed the roadway and went off into the ditch on the right side.

The passenger side of her vehicle struck a tree, spun, and came to rest on the east side of the tree. Bondville and Seymour firefighters responded and had to free Dowdy from her car, and she was brought to Carle Foundation Hospital via ambulance.

The Champaign County Coroner and Illinois State Police are still investigating.
